July 15, 2026The three Gili Islands—Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno—each offer a unique atmosphere, making island hopping an essential part of any visit. While they're only a short boat ride apart, each island has its own distinct character.
Gili Trawangan is the largest and most lively, known for its vibrant nightlife, diverse restaurants, and water sports. Gili Air offers a perfect balance between the bustling Trawangan and the peaceful Meno, with excellent snorkeling spots. Gili Meno is the smallest and most secluded, perfect for couples seeking romance and tranquility.
The easiest way to island hop is by hiring a local boat, commonly called a 'perahu.' These traditional outrigger boats can take you between islands for a reasonable fee. Alternatively, you can join organized island hopping tours that include snorkeling stops at multiple locations.
When island hopping, make sure to visit the underwater statue of 'Nest' between Gili Meno and Gili Air—a fascinating art installation that's become an artificial reef teeming with marine life.
Each island has unique snorkeling spots. Around Gili Trawangan, head to the northwest for shark sightings. Gili Air offers excellent wall diving, while Gili Meno is famous for its turtle habitat.
